The Port of Marseille

Masts crowd the harbor at Marseille, and Felix Vallotton flattens the whole scene into bands of slate blue and chalky white. The Port of Marseille turns a working Mediterranean waterfront into something severe and beautifully ordered. Forest green water fills the lower half, broken by pale reflections that trail beneath each hull. Steamers and sailboats sit at their moorings in profile, while the city behind rises as a dense block of cream facades and dark windows. The sky above stays almost bare, one flat plane pressing everything downward. A cool, composed harbor view like this suits a study or an office, anywhere a window onto salt air and distant traffic would be welcome.
