The Loing at Moret

The Loing slides past Moret in a slow grey-green current, its surface carrying reflections of the medieval town above. Gustave Loiseau painted this riverside view with quick, broken strokes, letting the water absorb the light of an overcast afternoon. Stone houses climb the far bank in shades of cream and ochre, their tiled roofs pressing down toward the quay. Loiseau builds each facade from small, deliberate touches of paint, while the bridge and its arches cut dark horizontal bands across the middle distance. Trees along the shoreline thin into bare branches, their silhouettes flickering against the pale sky. A study or hallway with soft daylight would let these quiet river tones settle in and do their work.
