The Auxerre Cathedral

Auxerre Cathedral rises above its square, twin towers holding the frame while Gustave Loiseau breaks the facade into flecked strokes of grey, cream, and violet shadow. Gothic tracery, weathered limestone, slate roofs... The brushwork enlivens the stone: dabs of rose and blue-green chase across the buttresses, and small figures drift through the pale plaza below. Sky presses close, painted in short charged marks of white and pearl. It suits a study or hallway where old European architecture and post impressionist color can hold the wall quietly.
