Sunset

A crimson sun sits low over dark water, pressing its reflection into a single burning column of paint. Felix Vallotton named this work Sunset, and everything in it serves that one fading moment. Flat bands of orange and gold stack behind the horizon while silhouetted shore and trees cut hard against the glow. The water reads as deep, almost black blue, broken only by that vertical flare of light. Every shape is simplified, the Nabis way, color laid on in smooth, unbroken fields. A dim hallway, a study with evening lamps, or a dining room with candlelight would meet this image halfway.
