Still Life with Self-portrait

A covered dish, a knife laid across pale linen, and a small portrait of the artist propped among the tableware: Felix Vallotton builds a still life with self-portrait that doubles as a quiet act of self-scrutiny. The tabletop fills the frame edge to edge, objects cropped close as if the viewer has just pulled up a chair. Muted browns and olive greens carry the composition, with cool highlights tracing the rim of the dish and the blade edge. Vallotton paints with his trademark smoothness, edges crisp and shadows flat, so each object holds a dollhouse stillness. The face in the miniature stares outward, unsmiling, an observer among the observed. A study or dining room gains an odd, compelling companion in it.
