Roses massed in a shallow vase, heads ranging from tight bud to full bloom, given the flat, decisive treatment Felix Vallotton brought to his still lifes. The paint lies smooth, every edge drawn firm, color set down in unbroken fields. Pink and cream petals hold against a darkened ground, leaves cut in deep green, the table line running level beneath the vessel. Shadow falls as one flat block, no fuss, no softening.
