Still Life with Gladioli

Tall gladioli rise through a Felix Vallotton still life, blooms stacked like bright coins along each stalk. Their weight tips the bouquet sideways while leaves slice upward, blade after blade, cool against the flowers. The petals run through coral, pink and deep carmine, each one outlined so firmly the edges feel cut rather than brushed. Behind them a plain ground holds the color steady, and the vase sits low and dark, pinning the tall stems to the table edge. Suits a dining room or a hallway where something upright and floral can hold its own on a quiet wall.
