Sous Bois

A dense forest interior fills the frame, trunks rising in vertical bands of green and umber. This sous bois by Felix Vallotton shows the Nabis painter working woodland into flat, deliberate planes of color. Look at how the foliage is handled: rounded clumps of leaf mass in deep viridian and olive, stacked like green clouds against the trunks. Vallotton flattens depth on purpose, letting pattern overtake perspective, the ground a low strip of mossy tone. Light barely reaches the forest floor. A reading nook, hallway, or quiet study suits this woodland scene, its greens settling a room without dimming it.
