Snow Rifts Near the Seine

Dark soil shows through the thaw in Snow Rifts Near the Seine, a winter riverbank by Gustave Loiseau, painted outdoors in quick divided strokes. Short dabs of mauve and cold blue break the snowfield into facets. Rifts of ochre and raw umber open where the white has pulled back, and the river runs a narrow band of slate beneath bare trees. A sooty footpath threads the bank. A study or reading nook gains the hush of a February morning, the cool greys settling beside light wood, linen, and stone.
