Setting Sun over Villerville

The sun sinks low above Villerville, its orange disc pressing into a sea rendered as flat bands of color. This Felix Vallotton seascape holds the Normandy coast at the exact minute daylight gives out. The water reads as three horizontal registers: deep teal near the shore, a colder green mid-channel, and a molten orange reflection running from horizon to foreground. Cliffs at the left edge go nearly black, their silhouettes cut hard against the glowing sky. Thin cloud bands cross the upper register in dull rose and grey, painted without blending, the way a Nabi would flatten a memory into pure shape. Hung in a dining room or above a sideboard, it brings the quiet drama of a Channel sunset indoors, best beside warm wood and low evening light.
