Red Sand and Snow

Russet earth shows through thinning snow in Red Sand and Snow, a winter landscape by Felix Vallotton where warm ground and cold light meet on one bare slope. Broad planes of ochre and brick tone carry the hillside, their edges held crisp against chalky drifts. A few dark trunks cross the middle distance, branches drawn thin, and violet shadow settles into the hollows that never quite thaw. The whole scene is built from clean, quiet masses. It belongs in a study or a quiet hallway, lending a room the dry cold of an afternoon high on a mountainside.
