Red House Near Port Marly

A red house near Port Marly holds the middle of the canvas, its brick-toned facade set against the pale water and thin sky of the Seine bend. Gustave Loiseau paints it with quick, layered strokes, the kind that let the surface flicker where light moves. Around the building, small figures cross the towpath, poplar shadows run long, and the river carries a green-grey sheen broken by short horizontal dabs of white. The roof reads almost vermilion where the sun catches it, cooling to rust along the eaves. A view like this settles well in a dining room or a stairway landing, anywhere the day changes slowly.
