Red House near Port Marly

A red brick house holds its ground beside the Seine at Port Marly, its facade burning russet against a sky of loose grey and cream. Gustave Loiseau builds the scene in short, deliberate strokes of paint, his post impressionist touch visible everywhere. Brick, plaster, water and riverbank light each get their own broken color, the surface stitched with small crosses and dashes. Foliage around the house stays half dissolved into green and violet shadow, so the red walls carry the whole weight of the composition. Sisley painted this stretch of river decades earlier, and Loiseau keeps the argument going in his own restless hand. A hallway or dining room gains a view of the Seine without leaving the house.
