Profundity

Mist sinks into a mountain gorge until only the highest ridgelines hold their shape. Yamamoto Gempo titled the scene Profundity, and depth is its whole argument. Graded washes of sumi ink, the classic Nihonga method, move from charcoal black at the foreground pines to a grey so pale the far slopes nearly dissolve. Mineral pigment sits on the silk weave in fine flecks, and a single thread of waterfall drops through the middle distance without a sound. Hang it where lamplight is low, a study or reading nook; the eye travels inward and the room grows quieter around the fading ridges.
