Two figures lean close in a dim interior, heads angled together as if the rest of the room has been dismissed. Private Conversation belongs to Felix Vallotton, the Nabi painter who treated domestic interiors like stage sets built from flat planes of color. The palette runs deep: umber walls, a lamp glow pooling on a tabletop, black shapes pressed against muted reds and greens. Vallotton flattens the forms into almost geometric blocks, letting the figures read as silhouettes while a doorway or window cuts a pale rectangle behind them. Every edge feels deliberate, cut rather than brushed. It belongs in a study or a reading corner, somewhere low-lit and quiet, where its hush and its secrets can hold the room.
