Pothius Quay at the Oie River

Stone quay walls line the Oie River in this Gustave Loiseau harbor scene, moored boats riding water streaked with mauve and slate grey. Loiseau built his surfaces in tight, enameled strokes, a post impressionist touch that turns reflections into rows of short horizontal dashes. Masts cut vertical lines against the sky. Rigging, bollards, and warehouse facades settle into a palette of oyster grey, bottle green, and faded brick. Suited to a study, hallway, or any quiet corner that rewards close looking.
