Poplars on the Banks of the Eure

Tall poplars rise from the grassy banks of the Eure, their slim trunks cutting vertical strokes against a sky of loosened blue and white. Gustave Loiseau paints the river landscape with quick, encaustic-thick dabs of oil, the water catching flickers of violet and green where the current turns. Along the near bank, meadow grass runs in layered strokes of sap and olive, while the reflections below break into short horizontal touches. Distant fields cool toward grey green at the horizon. A riverside scene like this sits naturally in a sunroom, hallway, or reading room with linen and pale wood.
