Poplars in Spring

Tall poplars rise in fresh spring green above a meadow in Poplars in Spring by Gustave Loiseau. The painting belongs to his post impressionist series of French countryside views. Loiseau built the scene with short, enameled brushstrokes. Slender trunks lean slightly, their young foliage broken into flecks of chartreuse and sap green against a soft blue sky. Light dapples across the grass in pale violet and cream, a technique recalling his Rouen and Pontoise subjects. Suited to a sunlit hallway, breakfast nook, or reading corner where the fresh spring atmosphere brings renewal.
