Pinks and Daisies

Pinks and daisies crowd a shallow space in this still life by Felix Vallotton, the flower heads painted so densely they seem to press against the picture plane. Carnation petals carry a deep rose red, built up in short loaded brushstrokes, while the daisies open pale and thin, white touched with grey at the centers. Vallotton sets the bouquet against a dark, nearly black ground, so the blossoms read almost carved, their edges sharpened by contrast. Leaves fall in blunt olive strokes, and the vase stays barely indicated, a column of tone holding the mass upright. A bouquet this saturated belongs in a dining room or an entryway, anywhere a dark wall needs a burst of cut flowers.
