Outskirts of Lausanne

Rooftops and garden walls spread along a hillside on the edge of Lausanne. Felix Vallotton builds the scene from flat, closely fitted blocks of color, letting the town climb the slope in orderly tiers. Low sun rakes across plaster facades in cream and pale rose, while cypress and bare fruit trees cast long blue shadows over tilled plots. Red tile roofs repeat like a pattern, broken here and there by a chimney, a garden gate, a stretch of dry grass. The horizon stays high, so the land itself carries the weight of the image. Suited to a hallway or dining room where a calm, structured landscape gives the eye somewhere to wander.
