Notre Dame de Grace, Honfleur

The grey stone church of Honfleur climbs above a working harbor in this Guy Rose canvas, its wooden tower rising over slate rooftops as fishing boats gather at the quay below. Rose paints the Norman port in cool blues and pearl greys, then breaks the water surface with quick strokes of violet and rose light. Masts lean at angles across the harbor basin, and the famous chapel of Notre Dame de Grace watches from its hill above the town. Sunlight touches the upper walls while shadows pool along the waterfront, giving the scene a soft, moist coastal atmosphere.
