Night

A pale moon hangs above a blackened horizon, its light flattened into one disc of cream against deep indigo. Night by Felix Vallotton strips everything down to shadow and glow. Vallotton builds the scene from flat, unmodulated fields of oil color, the Nabi habit of suppressing brushwork in favor of clean silhouette. Tree forms read like cut paper against the sky, and a thin strip of lighter blue marks the horizon. The foreground sinks into near-total lampblack. It belongs where evenings run long: a dim hallway, a bedroom, or a study that stays awake past midnight, eye drawn to that cold disc of light.
