Market Square of Warsaw by Night

Gas lamps scatter their glow across the cobbles of a nocturnal Warsaw market square, vendors and strollers reduced to silhouettes against the darkness. Józef Pankiewicz builds the scene in deep indigos and umbers, broken by pools of amber lamplight that catch on wet pavement and the pale haze of low cloud. Buildings loom as softened masses, their windows a scatter of faint gold, while the sky above holds a greenish afterglow along the horizon. This night scene suits a study or a dim hallway, where its lamplight carries across the wall.
