Louvier Road in Winter

A snowbound road runs through Louvier, hedgerows heaped white, telegraph poles diminishing toward bare poplars on the horizon. Gustave Loiseau records the whole stretch in his broken, searching brushwork. The palette is ash grey and violet shadow, with old snow carrying a faint blue undertone. Short impasto strokes build the crust of the drifts, while slushy wheel ruts show dark earth beneath. A lone figure advances along the verge, small against the empty fields. Well suited to a hallway or reading nook, where cold light and quiet roads reward a long, unhurried look.
