Lotus Tea Bowl

A single lotus bud opens across the curved wall of the bowl, its pale petals spreading against a deep celadon ground. Yamamoto Gempo renders the flower with the restraint of a brush trained on silk painting, each petal edge defined in a hair-thin line of darker glaze. Green shading pools at the base of the bud and thins to near-white at the tips, the way morning light catches a pond blossom. Below the rim, a narrow band of gilt tracery circles the bowl, catching whatever light falls nearby. The interior stays unadorned, glazed to a quiet sheen, as if the painter saved all his attention for the flower you face. In a tea room, a reading nook, or beside a low window, the lotus holds its calm.
