Le Vent

Wind tears across the whole picture plane. In Le Vent, Felix Vallotton flattens the gale into bands of pale green and slate blue, bending every tree and flag in one direction. His nabis training shows in the deliberate flatness. Curved strokes sweep across the surface like drawn gusts, each contour carrying the same diagonal pull. A lone figure pushes forward into it, coat snapping, while the landscape gives ground. There is no soft middle distance here, just pressure and motion held on a single plane. A hallway or stair landing suits it. Something with a draft.
