Last Sun Rays

The sun drops toward the horizon and throws its final rays across the water in this late-day seascape by Felix Vallotton. Flat bands of colour do all the work here, the way the Nabi painter liked them to. Ochre light spreads in a broad fan from the low disc, while the sea below sits almost black, cut by one long highlight. Clouds above take on salmon and violet edges. Everything is reduced to shape and edge, paint laid smooth, the horizon pulled tight across the composition. A quiet study or a north-facing sitting room suits its dusk hush, especially beside linen, oak, or deep unpolished wood.
