Landscape off Ruins and Fires

Ruins smolder at the center of the field, their broken walls rendered as flat black planes against a sky thick with smoke. Felix Vallotton titled the scene plainly, and it holds nothing back. Orange fire cuts along the base of the wreckage, its glow reflected in narrow bands across the churned earth. Above, columns of grey and violet smoke climb in the blunt, simplified shapes he learned among the Nabis, while a strip of green field runs untouched along the foreground. A study or library with dark shelves and leather chairs suits it well; the ash grey and ember orange keep company with walnut, brass, and old paper.
