Jetty at Fecamp

Timber piles, blackened by salt water, stride out from the shore: the jetty at Fecamp, painted by Gustave Loiseau in small, patient strokes of grey and green while fishing boats heel against the tide. Crosshatched brushwork, a signature of his Post-Impressionist training, ripples through the wet sand and the swell beyond the breakwater. Gulls hang above the quay. Pale chalk rises behind the rooftops, and low Norman light turns the shallow water to milky jade. A study, a stairway landing, or a hallway that wants a breath of Channel air: the cool palette settles easily against limewash walls and dark timber.
