In the Woods

Trees crowd the frame in In the Woods by Gustave Loiseau, a woodland scene where trunks rise in close ranks and the canopy presses low overhead. Loiseau worked in oil, building form with short, crosshatched strokes, and the surface here carries that signature weave. Moss greens and damp browns dominate, broken by cool violet shadow where light fails to reach the forest floor. Undergrowth tangles at the base of each trunk, leaves flickered in loose dabs, and a pale gap in the foliage opens onto distant sky. A dim hallway, stair landing, or reading room gains depth and quiet from this shaded, rustling interior of trees.
