Ice on the Oise River

Pans of ice drift down the Oise in this winter scene, Gustave Loiseau breaking the frozen river surface into short dabs of white, grey and cold green. Bare trees line the far bank, trunks picked out in thin violet strokes, and a small moored boat sits half locked in slush near the reeds. Short crosshatched touches of oil build the surface, cool greys settling over green water where the floes bunch and grind. It suits a study or hallway where low winter light falls, the cold palette reading clearly against warm plaster or pale oak shelving.
