A steep-roofed dwelling fills the foreground, pale light washing across its plastered facade in House of the Sisters in Pontoise by Gustave Loiseau. The French post-impressionist builds everything from small crosshatched strokes. Green shutters sit half closed against ochre plaster, and a tiled roof steps down over a garden where flowerbeds hold the cool morning shade. Behind, rooftops of the old town descend in terraces toward the Oise, each touch of paint crossing another like woven thread.
