Hendreville by the Eure River

Thatched rooftops cluster above the water at Hendreville, Gustave Loiseau following the Eure as it slides past gardens and low garden walls. Loiseau builds the village in small crosshatched strokes, ochre and moss green laid over grey underpainting so the light seems to flicker across plaster and tile. Willows lean toward the current, and the reflection breaks the facade into trembling bands of blue and rose. A quiet corner of a study or reading nook, anywhere that favors slow looking and the rhythms of a French river town.
