Strawberries heap in a shallow bowl at the table edge, scarlet skins glossy against pale cloth, a short bouquet of white and pink blossoms rising just behind. Flowers and Strawberries, by Felix Vallotton. Vallotton keeps every contour hard and clean. Each berry is outlined in a firm dark line, its red laid on flat and lacquered, leaves cut as single green shapes. Background and tabletop meet as two solid color fields, the Nabi habit of pressing space into planes. Only the petals keep any softness. A kitchen with open shelving, a sunlit breakfast nook, a dining room fond of still lifes: the picture belongs where food and flowers share the table.
