Etretat. The Battery Point

Foam fans out over dark rock at the base of the battery point at Etretat, the stretch of Normandy coast Gustave Loiseau painted again and again. Loiseau builds the sea from a lattice of short, crossed strokes, grey-green water breaking white where swell meets rock. The cliff face reads as packed chalk, pale ochre along the grassed crown, violet in the shaded hollows, gulls scattered as specks against overcast sky. A coastal study, a stairway hallway, or a reading nook with linen and weathered oak would suit the salt-air palette and cool Channel light.
