Prisoners drift across a sunbaked gravel yard beneath high stone walls, the scene Ramon Casas recorded in his Courtyard of the Old Barcelona Prison, the yard inmates called the lambs. Barred windows notch the upper masonry, and a shadowed arcade runs along one side where men in pale prison dress cluster out of the glare. Casas paints the stonework in ash gray and dusty ochre, Barcelona sun bleaching the gravel to bone white, his brush brisk and unsentimental. It belongs in a study or library corner where quiet, sober pictures hold their own, its gray daylight palette settling against dark wood and worn leather.
