Cligancourt Street

Cligancourt Street, a Gustave Loiseau painting, opens onto a sloping village lane where old houses crowd the pavement and the road climbs out of sight between shuttered facades. Loiseau builds the scene in short, deliberate strokes, his crosshatched brushwork laying cool grey roofs against warm plaster walls washed in pale morning light. Shadows pool blue at doorways, a few small figures dot the street, and the whole surface carries that airy, lived-in texture his Paris and provincial views share. It belongs in a hallway or study where its quiet village rhythm can be seen up close.
