Cliffs by the Sea

Pale cliffs shoulder out into open water, painted by Gustave Loiseau in Cliffs by the Sea. The headland fills the upper canvas while the tide works below. Loiseau builds the rock face from short, layered strokes of cream, ochre and cool grey, the chalk scored with shadows where weather has cut into it. Sea foam traces the base in broken white flecks. Above, a sky of quick blue and pearl light moves across the whole scene. A natural fit for a coastal hallway or a sunroom reading corner, anywhere that welcomes the salt air of the Normandy shore.
