Cliffs at Saint Jouin

Sheer chalk drops away to the sea, grassed along its top and weathered into grey streaks, the coastal subject Gustave Loiseau took up along the Normandy shore in Cliffs at Saint Jouin. Every surface carries his trademark crosshatch. Tightly woven strokes build the rock face, bone white against slate shadow, while the water below shifts from bottle green to milky shallows. Turf runs to the brink in quick dabs of moss and ochre, and gulls hang as single flicks of oil paint. A stairwell or seaside reading nook suits it, any room with steady daylight to keep the stone cool and set the tide moving again.
