Chateau Gaillard at Andelys

The ruins of Chateau Gaillard crown a chalk bluff above the Seine at Les Andelys, and Felix Vallotton renders that broken silhouette in flat, decisive planes of green and grey. Stone towers, jagged walls, river below. Vallotton builds the composition from bands of color rather than soft gradation: the fortified ridge sits hard against the sky, its ramparts reduced to pale geometry, while the valley unfolds in layered greens. Trees read as rounded masses. The water carries a cool, glassy sheen. Every form is simplified until it feels carved rather than painted, a post impressionist approach that trades atmosphere for structure. A study or library with pale walls gives this river landscape the quiet it asks for, letting the Norman fortress hold the room.
