Carpet Design

A swan glides through the center of the drawing, neck curved into a full S, wings fanned flat against a ground of fine scrolling vines. Otto Eckmann built this carpet design around that single bird, everything else bending to its rhythm. Ink lines run confident and unbroken across the sheet, the kind drawn with a reed pen in long practiced strokes. Interlaced stems knot around pale blossoms, curling into spirals that echo the swan tail feathers. Deep teal and soft gold alternate in the drawing, a color scheme meant to be read flat, pattern against pattern, with no horizon and no shadow anywhere. A hallway or stair landing suits it well, somewhere a visitor pauses at eye level and follows the vines from edge to edge.
