Carpet Design

Swans curve into each other across the field of this Otto Eckmann carpet design, their long necks bending into interlaced arcs that lock the whole composition together. Deep blues and greens sit against cream grounds, the flat color shapes outlined with the clean, controlled line of German Jugendstil drawing. Every curve repeats and answers the next, so the eye travels in loops rather than lines. A hallway, music room, or dining space with plain walls gives this ornamental rhythm the room it deserves.
