Calleja Florentina

A narrow Florentine street opens between tall plaster facades, sun struck on one wall and deep shadow on the other. Calleja Florentina by José Garnelo catches that exact Italian hour, when stone turns the color of honey and doorways go cold and blue. Look closely and the craft shows itself. Wet plaster edges soften into ochre and rose where the light grazes them, laundry lines cut thin dark diagonals across the sky, and a lone figure occupies the shaded passage at mid ground. The brushwork stays loose in the sunlit plaster, tight and careful along the architraves. It belongs in a hallway or a stair landing, anywhere a small window of light falls. A study with old leather chairs would suit it equally well.
