By the Oise River

A towpath curves along the Oise, its gravel bank washed in pale greens and cool greys. Gustave Loiseau painted this riverside scene with quick, broken strokes, letting the water carry the light. Willows lean over the far bank, their foliage dabbed in olive and sage. Small houses with slate roofs sit low behind the trees, their walls catching a muted pink. Reflections wobble across the current in short horizontal dashes, and a lone figure works the shore under an overcast sky.
