Breaking Surf

White water detonates against dark rock in Breaking Surf, a seascape by Ashcan School painter George Luks. The title tells the story before the eye does. Luks loads the wave with heavy impasto, cream and bone pigments dragged thick over slate green water so the foam stands off the surface like sea spray caught mid air. Beneath, wet sand mirrors a low grey sky in long horizontal strokes, the palette held to pearl, umber and cold blue grey. Built for a coastal bedroom or a seaside reading room where the sound of weather belongs on the walls.
