Autumn Landscape with a Stream

Birch trunks lean over moving water, their bark mottled white and charcoal against a flush of amber foliage. Arnold Marc Gorter sets an autumn landscape with a stream at the moment when the year turns and every leaf shows its cost. The water runs shallow and quick, skimming a gravel bed the painter has built from stippled dabs of grey, ochre and faint rose. Gold and copper canopies break the sky into fragments, and the reflections wobble in the current so that light seems to sit on the surface rather than above it. Bare branches cross the upper edge in fine, deliberate strokes, a Dutch habit of precision that keeps the softness honest. Well suited to a study or a quiet reading nook, anywhere a cool grey wall needs the warmth of October light.
