Two paired specimens, one pale and one dark, hang side by side in this Karl Blossfeldt plate from Art Forms in Nature. The contrast does the composing: light against dark, smooth against furrowed, each form answering the other. Look closely and the detail sharpens. Veined surfaces catch the light along their ridges, while the darker specimen sinks into shadow, its edges just legible. The neutral grey ground keeps everything suspended, the way a specimen case keeps a leaf flat and still. Every hair and serration was recorded by the camera at magnification.
