Art Forms in Nature 46

A branch of horsetail rises through plate 46 of Art Forms in Nature, its jointed stem and whorled needle branches standing against flat gray like a drawing made by the plant itself. Karl Blossfeldt photographed each specimen at several times magnification, so the silica-roughened ridges of the stem read as columns and the side shoots radiate with mathematical regularity. Every node, every fine vertical striation is held in crisp silver gelatin tone, deep charcoal against pale ground. This monochrome botanical study settles naturally into a study or reading nook, where its calm geometry rewards long looking.
