Art Forms in Nature 41

Horsetail stems rise in strict vertical ranks, each joint banded and ribbed like bamboo cast in silver. Karl Blossfeldt photographed Equisetum at magnification for Art Forms in Nature 41, turning a common field plant into architecture. The gelatin silver tonality runs deep charcoal to pale ash, so every ridge along the stalk catches light differently. Nodes divide the frame into measured intervals while fine vertical striations read almost like fluting on a column. Nothing is softened; the background falls to pure black and the plant stands forward, sculptural and exact. A study wall, an architect studio, or a hallway of framed botanicals all give this image the company it deserves.
