Plate 102 from Art Forms in Nature gives us a sprig of meadow rue, its tiny flowers held on wire-thin stalks that branch and rebranch like a diagram drawn by the plant itself. Karl Blossfeldt photographed the specimen against plain paper, so every filament, bud and opened blossom reads in clean silver grey. The stems cross at sharp angles, the flower heads cluster at the tips, and the whole structure looks engineered rather than grown. A quiet study, a hallway, or a desk nook suits this kind of disciplined botanical image.
